Volunteer Services – Marge's Mission

Volunteers provide vital assistance to hospital staff and patients. Their contributions annually amount to more than 30,000 hours of service. Volunteers provide a variety of services, such as greeting our patients, sorting incoming hospital mail and escorting patients to the appropriate areas. It is a great way to stay active in your community and to provide a valuable service to those in need.

To be considered as a volunteer, please complete the online volunteer application or call the Volunteer Office for a paper application at 724.357.7138.

Volunteer Opportunities

Indiana Regional Medical Center main campus

  • Information Desk: Volunteers serving at the Information Desk located inside the main entrance to the hospital greet patients and visitors and assist them with directions to their desired destination whether it's a specific department for a test or procedure or a patient room where their loved one is staying. The Information Desk volunteers answer phone calls from individuals seeking a variety of information about the services provided at Indiana Regional Medical Center. They also assist with transporting patients who are being discharged from the hospital to the front entrance where their family or friend is waiting with the car to take them home.
  • Surgical Waiting Room: Volunteers serving in the Surgical Waiting Room assist individuals who are waiting while their family member or friend is in surgery.
  • Mailroom: Volunteers serving in the mailroom sort incoming mail Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and place in various department mailboxes.
  • Hospitality Cart: Volunteers serving on the Hospitality Cart provide patients and families the opportunity to purchase snacks, beverages, magazines, etc., by taking the cart stocked with various products from the Pantry throughout the hospital.
  • Pantry & Gift Shop: Volunteers operate the cash register in the Pantry and they stock the products that are sold in the Gift Shop.
  • Patient Education Guide: Indiana Regional Medical Center provides online education for patients with certain chronic illnesses to help them better understand living with their condition. Since some patients are not comfortable navigating computers and the internet, volunteers can assist them with accessing their assigned education modules to view.
  • Patient Guide: Volunteers serving as Patient Guides help patients get from one location to another within the hospital. For example, patients coming for some neurology tests and procedures may need assistance getting from registration to the treatment area so a volunteer may be asked to escort them. Another area where Patient Guides are helpful is the surgical department where they help patients get to registration when they arrive.

IRMC at Chestnut Ridge Facility (Blairsville)

  • Greeter: Indiana at Chestnut Ridge is an outpatient facility located in Blairsville that provides urgent care services, outpatient testing, physical therapy, and primary and specialty physician services. Volunteers welcome patients to the facility and assist them with finding their destination.

The Human Motion Institute (HMI)

  • Greeter: The Human Motion Institute is an outpatient facility located on the IRMC campus that provides musculoskeletal related services including orthopedics, physical therapy, dermatology, and pain management. Volunteers welcome patients to the facility and assist them with finding their destination.

About Marge's Mission

Marge Scheeren devoted her life to serving others in her community. Indiana Regional Medical Center and our patients were blessed to be one of the numerous community organizations that she chose to serve. Marge’s volunteer service to IRMC spanned 55 years (of the organization’s 103 years in existence). She started volunteering at IRMC in 1961 and was appointed by the IRMC Auxiliary, the parent organization overseeing the volunteers, in 1975 to serve as the Director of Volunteer Services, a position that received no monetary compensation during her tenure. She held the position until her death on May 20, 2017.

Volunteer of the Year

Please join us in congratulating Millie Miller for being chosen as the recipient of the 2018 Marge Scheeren Volunteer Service Award.

Millie has volunteered at IRMC for 44 years. She has served at the Information Desk in the Lobby, at the cash register in the Pantry, and in the Emergency Department. Multiple volunteers and employees nominated her for her cheerful, positive attitude; for her compassion; for being helpful to visitors, patients, employees and fellow volunteers; and for her willingness to go above and beyond.

Upon receiving the award at the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, Millie shared how much she enjoys volunteering at IRMC and that the people she serves with are like family to her.

When you see Mille, please thank her for her service and congratulate her on receiving the 2018 Marge Scheeren Volunteer Service Award.
