Diabetes Resources

The Diabetes Education Center at Indiana Regional Medical Center provides a comprehensive range of programs and services for people with diabetes and for those at risk of developing diabetes. The Center has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association since 2003 for providing services to both inpatients and outpatients who meet the national standards for diabetes self-management. For more information about any of the programs, please call the Center at 724.357.7164.

The Center for Diabetes Education provides:

Diabetes Education

The diabetes self-management classes, which include an individual assessment and three group classes, are designed to provide people with diabetes an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to successfully manage their diabetes. The sessions include information about meal planning, exercise, medications, sick day management and other important topics that help to maintain a healthy life with diabetes.

Individual sessions on insulin administration, medical nutrition therapy, glucose monitoring instructions, or nutritional counseling, carbohydrate counting and weight management are also available. A physician referral is required.

Gestational Diabetes

About three to eight percent of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes. The treatment and education goal for women with gestational diabetes is to maintain blood glucose levels similar to those of pregnant women who do not have gestational diabetes. The Center for Diabetes Education session includes review of management guidelines, nutritional management and instruction on use of glucose meter for frequent blood sugar testing. Achieving the goal of blood sugar control will help to ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. A physician referral is required.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring

This test monitors and records blood glucose levels continuously over a period of two to three days. The information obtained is used to improve the understanding of patient-specific patterns of glucose control. The Diabetes Education Center applies the monitor and provides the patient training. A physician order is required.

Insulin Pumps

Assessment, education and training are provided by a certified pump trainer. The insulin pump overview session will provide information about insulin pumps on the market, principals of pump therapy, pump wearer responsibilities and the process of obtaining a pump. Individual sessions are available for new pump wearers that include the basics of pump therapy, pattern management, nutrition management and trouble shooting. Educational sessions are also available for the seasoned pump wearer who wishes to increase their knowledge of the insulin pump or use advanced pump features. All sessions require a physician referral. Other topics are available and are based on the individual’s need.

Diabetes Prevention Program

The Diabetes Education Center at IRMC is a participating site for the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), which is an initiative led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This 16-week program is designed to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 Diabetes among people with pre-diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes, a family history of diabetes or an elevated BMI. The program focuses on lifestyle changes leading to weight loss of about seven percent and increase in physical activity. Following completion of the program, participants receive monthly support for two years. Individuals must qualify to participate in the program.
